None shall sleep...

So last Thursday was a wonderful night in Milwaukee. Jen Davis was in town and gave a lecture to a full house at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Much of the audience were students which was great to see. After the lecture some of us gathered at Milwaukee's own Nessun Dorma. It was a long night to say the least. Above are Kristen, Tara, Justine, Andy, Kevin, Mel, Megan and Jen
As you can tell by my weak camera skills I was having a great time as well!
Good times.

a day at the museum

Mel and I revisited the Unmasked and Anonymous Exhibition at MAM yesterday. It was wonderful to spend time with the work in a quiet gallery. The show was mobbed with people last week Thursday at the opening, with little room to move let alone see work.

This is one of my favorite pieces by Shimon & Lindemann, Jennie 2002 - a large tintype. The room was beautifully lit with soft spots on the ambryotypes, tintypes and dauguerrotypes. Next to this glowing portrait of Jennie is a large ambrotype of my fellow SFAI grad Tim Sullivan.
Other favorites from the show...

Gertrude Kasebier's Self Portrait 1899 plantinum print

Larry Clark's Tulsa

(side note - Larry Clark graduated from the Layton School of Art the predecessor of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design)

Milwaukee's own Frank Ford's Portrait of his mother

Jen Davis
(Jen Davis will be in Milwaukee to give an artist talk on Thursday, October 30, 6:15 p.m.
at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Reception to follow: 7–8 p.m. )

Newly acquired Jason Lazarus- from the series living with a portrait

Andrew Phelps - Buffet

Thank you to Andrew for posting about my Surface box set on his new blog Buffet. Every project on the buffet is stunning. I would add many of them to my collection, if only I got paid in euros!

Mel Trittin was the key to this cross Atlantic connection for me. Thanks for thinking of me Mel.

Sunday in Waterford WI (part 2)

Mel was gracious to share her beautiful space with me on Sunday. She cleared the walls and the room and allowed me to use 26 ft to install a working piece lacuna. Images of the finished installation coming soon....

I wanted to share a few snapshots of Mel's evergrowing collection of contemporary photography. Wouldn't you love to have a flat file drawer that looks like this...?:

A collection of books including these...? :

And a salon style hanging of a selection of your private collection....?

morning in waterford wi

A nice 45 minute drive to waterford wi takes me to Studio 107, Mel's gorgeous studio. Light pours in, photographs are everywhere, stacks of beautiful art books and great company.
Check out her space, love the cork floor! ... note- I only photographed a corner of the space. (Another post will have to include her extensive collection - most acquired online!)

Must see in Milwaukee...

Busy night tonight... off to see as much work as possible. Spring Gallery Night in Milwaukee is always one of the best art events in town. There are many openings tonight but the one not to miss is the 2008 MARNmentors Show Two at Hotcakes Gallery.
Show Opens tonight from 6-9pm and runs April 18 - May 04. Gallery is open TH-SU 12-5PM

I am really excited to see my good friend Mel Trittin's work at Hotcakes Gallery. Most of you probably know her as cigarettesandpurity She will be showing her new series "Promised Land." From Mel's statement about the work...
I’m interested in what I perceive as contradictions.

When I learned of a paintball park called Promised Land, which advertised itself as “America’s best Christian paintball park,” my upbringing by a pacifist minister compelled me to investigate.

It is a great series of work and it is Mel's first Milwaukee exhibition, I look forward to it!

installed

Pieces from Surface 2004 and Churn 2006 installed at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art for the WI Triennial. The space is beautiful and airy. The glass stairs and 3 story windows looking out at State Street connect art and world in a brillant space.

Milwaukee talks...

Three wonderful blogs by three photographers working in my home town that I really admire. Each navigating cyberspace to share their thoughts and opinions of contemporary photography and the artistic process.

(Not to mention that they are good bloggers and post regularly... sorry about the slow moving posts. Now that teaching has slowed down I hope to add to the conversation a bit more.)
