What are you doing on Saturday?

If I was in NYC I would be heading to The Homefront Gallery to see Justine Reyes' solo show Home, Away from Home

Justine Reyes
Saturday, November 12 · 4:00pm - 7:00pm
The Homefront Gallery
26-23 Jackson Avenue
Long Island City, NY
"The Homefront Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by Justine Reyes opening to the public on November 12 and continuing until January 8.

Home, Away from Home is a series of portraits of Reyes’ aging mother and uncle taken over the past seven years at home and in hotel rooms while traveling abroad. This body of work draws from the artist’s close relationship with her family to convey the experience of leaving and returning home and the fear of losing those closest to us..."

VESTIGE - Works by Justine Reyes and Sonja Thomsen

OPENING RECEPTION:
Friday April 9th 7-11p
58 Gallery
58 coles st jersey city nj. 07302

Justine Reyes:
These Last Things consists of large-scale color photographs of the interior of four drawers. I took these drawers out of my uncle's dresser after he passed away.  The title refers to the Novissima or the Four Last Things that every man must face; Death, Judgement, Heaven and Hell. I chose this title not only because my uncle was Catholic and very religious but also because it refers to the things we leave behind when we die. These drawers are the last physical trace or vestige of my uncle, left untouched in his memory.

Sonja Thomsen:
As the word lacuna references both intellectual and physical gaps, the temporal installation titled lacuna is a metaphor for memory and aging.  70 small images hang on the wall, some in stacks of reproductions waiting to be peeled away.  Throughout the duration of the installation the images are removed, fade and reveal an impression in plexi of the image that was once there. Place and person become symbol and impression in the work creating an emotive narrative suspended in the gap between; a man straddling dementia, a boy in his teenage prime, hands cradling the last harvest of raspberries.

DIRECTIONS: 58 Gallery is easily accessible from NYC by PATH train. Enter the PATH station on 6th Ave. at 33rd, 23rd, 14th, 9th, Christopher St., or World Trade in Manhattan and exit at Grove St. in Jersey City. Take a short walk up Newark Ave., make a right onto Coles St. The gallery is between 3rd and 4th. 58 Coles Street.

Rainbow over Queens

Lovely day in the city. Met 8 artists (Justine is one of them)
participating in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC). It was a full day of studio visits with photography students (undergrad and grad) from Syracuse University led by Doug Dubois.  I was fortunate to tag along with the group and hear from each artist about their work and experience navigating their careers.  It was a good day and I have many pictures of the artists to post... stay tuned.

rochester to new york city...

by way of Amtrak. The train was a pleasant experience with a beautiful vista of the Hudson River for the first 5 hours then news of the delay spread and the energy on the crowded cars grew more anxious.

theanyspacewhatever show at the Guggenheim was a treat as well as seeing the Catherine Opie show before it closed.

Justine and I had a great time catching up during the short weekend visit. See her new G10 - yes I had camera envy. Justine just launched her website - check it out here.

Heather Hambrecht of (h(om)e) was my travel companion last weekend. It was great to have a friend along every step of the way. She too had business in New York - fabric shopping and meetings with boutiques.

My first trip to Mood Fabrics. It was amazing watching heather shop - I had no idea what I was looking at but she was specific, speedy and decisive in her buying.

Home again, Home again. Back to the chilly Wisconsin tundra and the 6 inches of snow...

skype is great!

sonja and justine by CSR

So last week Justine Reyes is sitting in my living room, visiting from Queens NY and we are on video Skype talking to our friend and illustrator extraordinaire Cristina Sitja Rubio who is living in Berlin. Thanks to this technology the three of us are catching up as if we were all living in San Francisco together again.

None shall sleep...

So last Thursday was a wonderful night in Milwaukee. Jen Davis was in town and gave a lecture to a full house at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Much of the audience were students which was great to see. After the lecture some of us gathered at Milwaukee's own Nessun Dorma. It was a long night to say the least. Above are Kristen, Tara, Justine, Andy, Kevin, Mel, Megan and Jen
As you can tell by my weak camera skills I was having a great time as well!
Good times.
