Andrew Phelps - Buffet

Thank you to Andrew for posting about my Surface box set on his new blog Buffet. Every project on the buffet is stunning. I would add many of them to my collection, if only I got paid in euros!

Mel Trittin was the key to this cross Atlantic connection for me. Thanks for thinking of me Mel.

oil in water

I can't see the rigs out there... but I know they are out there beyond my horizon.

long walks on the beach... day 2

I had help finding these shark teeth this morning from a lovely couple from Cincinnati Ohio.
It is amazing to think about how old the fossils are and how many teeth are in the massive body of water that I have the privilege to enjoy right now.
I have to come in by 10am, mid-day heat and the intense sun are too much for my northern blood.
A pod of dolphins just swam by my picture window. Where am I? How am I going to make photographs in such a picturesque place? I am taking it in, watching the light. Working on images I scanned prior to my arrival...

I will hopefully receive my G9 today and will be able to share better images in the future.

Michael Ashkin

I had the opportunity to meet Michael Ashkin during his visit to MIAD in February. I unfortunately missed his lecture as I was teaching an evening class... #@!# schedule! I am really interested in his work and have an affinity to his representations of waters.

new video piece...burning water

I was asked by the art critic for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to participate in a new project that would showcase artists in the region.
What would happen if some of Milwaukee's best artists had five minutes to spend with you, the readers of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel?

Mary Louise Schumacher asked four artists to create a 5min video about why and how they make their work. I was interested in using this opportunity to work with video footage I had collected of a lake in northern wisconsin and used motor oil in my backyard. I was pleased to collaborate with a talented sound and video artist, Jason Nanna.

It was a great experience and challenge to create a 5min piece in one month - in a medium I am not as familiar with. Jason taught me a lot about basic video and sound editing and I am really pleased with what we came up with. We approached the project as an opportunity to create a new piece of artwork that references my photographs and speaks to some of my influences.

The project - In the Making - was launched last week on the Journal Sentinel's website. Let me know what you think...

Review in the Shepherd Express, Milwaukee WI

Milwaukee's Shepherd Express published a review of my show at Dean Jensen Gallery titled Blue Water, Black Gold. Peggy Sue Dunigan is eloquent with words.

She talks vriefly about the new boxed set that I have recently finished with Electric Works in San Francisco. I will post more about that soon.

Surface series online at Photoeye...

Photoeye is a great photography resource. Located in Santa Fe, the bookstore and gallery are worth a visit. Online one can access both the bookstore and gallery as well as auctions and their magazine. Photoeye also has a great number of online galleries of individual photographers work in their Photographers Showcase. You can search the portfolios by techniques, artist and keyword... a wealth of imagery. I am currently participating in their Photographers Showcase for one year... I am curious about the opportunites, if any, that may emerge from being in an online gallery. If you haven't explored photoeye I incourage you to do so, there is such a variety of work to be seen.
