more about Silverstein Opening

Now that I have had a bit of time to process the whirlwind visit I would like to share a bit about the wonderful things I was able to see and the incredible artists I had the opportunity to meet.

Upon arrival to NY we headed straight to Chelsea and visited Yossi Milo Gallery, ClampArt, Robert Mann Gallery and a sneak peak of Silverstein Photography. Out for a quick bite at Nisos on 19th St. and back to Silverstein for the opening. What a turnout! The gallery looked great- I was impressed with how they showcased 10 different artists and managed to give each one plenty of space. The gallery and the street outside were mobbed with people and energy.

It was an exciting evening and meeting the other artists in the show was one of the highlights.

Michael Lundgren is living and working in Phoenix AZ. I met him four years ago in San Francisco at one of Linda Connor's parties. It was great to reconnect with a fellow "landscape" photographer and his work was breathtaking in person.

Curtis Mann is finishing up his MFA in Chicago. I was happy to make another Midwest connection. The object that is the photograph - its emulsion and substrate- becomes the focus of Curtis' work. I enjoy how his photographs dance with drawing.

Will Michels was a joy to talk with. He is an animated storyteller and his passion for his work is palpable. I have seen his work in a variety of venues online and it was great to view the work in person.

Silverstein Photography Annual - this Saturday September 8, 6-8pm

I am excited to be heading out to NY for the opening of SPA at Silverstein Photography on Saturday night. The gallery just added more images of the show as well as the nomination letters from the curators view a list of them here

The following is Lisa Hostetler's statement about my work...

Lisa Hostetler for Sonja Thomsen

I discovered Sonja Thomsen’s work soon after my arrival in Milwaukee in 2005. At the time, she was in the midst of her Surface series, a group of images depicting the reflective surfaces of puddles and other mundane accumulations of liquid commonly found in and around urban terrain. Her attention to this humble subject, and the care and delicacy with which she rendered its appearance, gave me pause. Soon I realized that her photographs were not the formal abstractions that they at first appeared to be. Instead, they were about moments of heightened consciousness amid the flux of everyday life—as when you glimpse a reflection in a glass of water and are launched into a daydream.

Crude functions similarly, but it plunges even deeper into the matrix of thought and emotion that comprises contemporary American life. In the current political climate, oil is a complicated subject, evoking the energy crisis and the war in Iraq. For Thomsen, it is also personal: a cousin to whom she is close served as a marine in Iraq. Her oil photographs pique these associations, yet they are beautiful, with rich, creamy surfaces and subtle details that reward extended viewing. The series points to the ubiquity and influence of oil—that raw and mysterious substance on which third-world economies depend and first-world life runs—while reminding us of its virtual invisibility in daily life. How often do we see actual oil? Thomsen’s photographs invite us to stare at it and think about it. For me, the result is an uneasy conflation of personal and political blame, along with a slick reminder of how seductive it is to look without thinking. Crude doesn’t let me do that, and that is why I nominated Sonja Thomsen for this project.

January flew by

I had a great trip out to NY at the beginning of January.

I went to see a great new musical Spring Awaking.

Spent a week in Queens with my good friend and fellow SFAI photography alumni Justine Reyes. Justine will be visiting Milwaukee to give an artist talk in March... stay tuned!

Spent a few days taking in great shows in Chelsea.
It was great to Brian Ulrich's show at Julie Saul Gallery. The James Bidgood prints at Clamp Art were beautiful. I was able to see one of David Hillard's pieces in the flesh at Yancey Richardson Gallery Richardson is currently showing portraits by Helen Van Meene. I am drawn to these classical contemporary portraits.

I really enjoyed the show at Foley Gallery, not to mention the space. What a beautful space. Tomas Allen's show "New Releases" is stunning. I really enjoy the narratives Allen creates by disecting pulp fiction novel covers.

I think one of the highlights of my visit was attending Henry Wessel's opening at Robert Mann Gallery, another beautiful gallery space. Wessel was one of my professors in graduate school at SFAI. Wessel's critiques were always intensely productive. Wessel's new 5 book box set by Stiedl was available at the gallery. I was happy to take that beautiful collection home with me. It was so great to catch up with him and many other SFAI Alumni. Henry Wessel, Walapai, Arizona, 1971
