2009Pause, to Begin is a unique project born in discussions about the direction of contemporary photography today. The beautiful hardbound catalogue (color, 108 pages) accompanies the Pause, to Begin exhibition held at Booksmart Studio from January 2–30, 2009, and is limited to 500 copies. The remarkable catalogue showcases the work of the 15 selected photographers, as well as statements on photography the creation of Pause, to Begin by founders Ethan Jones and David Wright; advisors John Paul Caponigro and Joyce Tenneson; juror Cig Harvey; and editorial director Susan Morelock.

It was a great night in Rochester. The pause to begin opening was a lot of fun. It was great to see Ethan and David again as well as meet Shannon Johnstone. I will try and post images tomorrow, getting up early to take the train into NYC.

lacuna...

Thanks to Mel who pointed me to Jim Johnson's post that introduced me to Kay Ryan's poem Lacunae. Next week, I will be showing a small installation of my piece titled lacuna in the Pause to Begin exhibition at Booksmart Studios Gallery Kunstler in Rochester NY. The show runs for the month of January.

lacuna installation

Lacunae
Kay Ryan

Lacunae aren't
what was going to be
empty anyway.
They aren't spaces
with uses, such as margins or highway edges.
Lacunae are losses
in the middle of places -
drops where something
documented happened
but the document is
gone - pond shaped
or jagged.

Last Day to order....

one of David Wright's beautiful images...

from David:
In January 2009 I leave Maine for Alebtong, Uganda, where I will spend two months volunteering and photographing for A River Blue, a non-profit arts empowerment project for the children of formerly internally displaced persons in Northern Uganda. I will be using my large format camera to photograph the people and landscape for a traveling exhibition and book that will be used to raise funds for A River Blue. Details will be announced in the spring/summer of 2009.

rain, wind and sun... day 6

all of the subtle water movement gets lost in the compressed video... oh well

It was an eventful day of weather. The strong winds off the gulf were cool and salty.
Its amazing to have the beach waiting for you when you get frustrated with your work inside...
Working on images for pause to begin and a soon to be announced project...

visit with ethan and david....

Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of meeting Ethan Jones and David Wright, founders of Pause to Begin. We had a great visit and interesting conversation. They put me on the spot for a few hours interviewing me about my work and my passion for photography. Afterwards we had a mini dance party to shake off the nerves. They were great people, ambitious and curious. I look forward to seeing how they conclude this project.
