Thrilling...
"It’s thrilling to see an excellent exhibition of photographs conceived by a highly credentialed artist and curated by the informed and intelligent Hostetler."A review of the Taryn Simon exhibition at MAM by By Judith Ann Moriarty of Third Coast Digest. It is a good read but she is very cynical about the Milwaukee audience's ability to engage intellectually with Simon's work. We should expect more from Milwaukee and I think that is what curator Lisa Hostetler is doing with grace. Challenging us with art, rather than entertain us... another Impressionism show? Really...
The Taryn Simon show is the kind of exhibition that the Milwaukee Art Museum should pursue. Enough cotton candy already.

This is the New York City of Lisa Hostetler’s “Street Seen: The Psychological Gesture in American Photography, 1940-1959,” a liberally illustrated volume out next month from DelMonico Books. The collection of photos, which is on view at the Milwaukee Art Museum from Jan. 30 through April 25, presents a city crowded with artists and dreamers toiling in a country that was transitioning out of a mighty war and into the high watermark of the American Century. It is a city, and a nation, of conflicts and aspirations, shadows and brightness, and the long slog from survival to success.

on the wall...
That's me - the orange square on the wall at the Milwaukee Art Museum... the rotation will only be up through the beginning of December. Its really an honor to be on the same wall as some of my idols... Mr. Callahan in particular. Surreal.
