This is the New York City of Lisa Hostetler’s “Street Seen: The Psychological Gesture in American Photography, 1940-1959,” a liberally illustrated volume out next month from DelMonico Books. The collection of photos, which is on view at the Milwaukee Art Museum from Jan. 30 through April 25, presents a city crowded with artists and dreamers toiling in a country that was transitioning out of a mighty war and into the high watermark of the American Century. It is a city, and a nation, of conflicts and aspirations, shadows and brightness, and the long slog from survival to success.
