one last christmas celebration

Cain and I are off to celebrate the holidays with the Swanson's. My mom's side of the family. Paul (94) and Ruth (79) started it all. My mother is one of five children, I am one of 16 grandchildren and there are three great grandchildren. It is always chaos we we all get together in one place but its always a great time. Yes there are differences but love and tradition keep us together.
Many of these people frequent the photographs in my piece lacuna.

lacuna...

Thanks to Mel who pointed me to Jim Johnson's post that introduced me to Kay Ryan's poem Lacunae. Next week, I will be showing a small installation of my piece titled lacuna in the Pause to Begin exhibition at Booksmart Studios Gallery Kunstler in Rochester NY. The show runs for the month of January.

Lacunae
Kay Ryan

Lacunae aren't
what was going to be
empty anyway.
They aren't spaces
with uses, such as margins or highway edges.
Lacunae are losses
in the middle of places -
drops where something
documented happened
but the document is
gone - pond shaped
or jagged.

rollin'

Time to leave the Hermitage. I will have a short visit with my Great Uncle Gordon and Aunt Rose Marie in Seminole FL and then back to the snowy land of Milwaukee. Time to be with family and celebrate the end of another generous year. Looking forward to OBAMA's inauguration on the 20th!!!!

reciprocal labor....

“As a parable of a gifted person, “The Shoemaker and the Elves” is also a parable for artists. Most artists early on find themselves in the position of the shoemaker on the first night – a talent has appeared, but it’s naked, immature. Ahead lie the years of reciprocal labor which precede the release of an accomplished gift.”
Lewis Hyde The Gift

When talking with David Kinsey, his passion and commitment to his practice of painting is palpable. He shared stories about opportunities to exhibit in NYC right after Yale - but he turned them down, understanding he needed time with his painting, to mature as a painter. I respect this tremendously. Putting ones practice first and making the hungry market wait - training for the marathon rather than the sprint. My time here at the Hermitage has helped me re-evaluate my personal goals and focus on the artistic process taking me where it will.

one of David Wright's beautiful images...

from David:
In January 2009 I leave Maine for Alebtong, Uganda, where I will spend two months volunteering and photographing for A River Blue, a non-profit arts empowerment project for the children of formerly internally displaced persons in Northern Uganda. I will be using my large format camera to photograph the people and landscape for a traveling exhibition and book that will be used to raise funds for A River Blue. Details will be announced in the spring/summer of 2009.

About a Guy...

Guy Hundere is the other current artist in residence at the Hermitage. Guy is a Texan living and working in Barcelona SPAIN. Guy works primarily in video - animated 3-d renderings. It has been great to get to know him and his work.
This piece was shown in Chelsea recently as well as at the Hermitage Lobster bake last month. The piece is rear projected in a window and runs in a graceful loop.
