I love my friends!

So I turned 30 last week... It was harder than I thought it would be.
Thanks to my friends and patient husband I am a little more optimistic this week than last. I'm working on making this year one of my best - hopefully it will kick off with Obama's win next week!

Justine Reyes 2008

Justine flies into town this week and we are going to have a great time. Justine's work will be at MIAD in the Perspectives Photography Gallery from November 2 - November 21. We will be at the Jen Davis lecture on Thursday night, hopefully a day trip to Chicago and out for Halloween- Justine (Frida Kahlo) Reyes and Sonja (? ?) Thomsen... knocking on doors for OBAMA

Yesterday was my first time out canvasing. It was an incredible experience. My friend organized a neighborhood canvasing group and an Obama employee came by to give a short a talk, essentially door knocking 101. I was very nervous at the start but it was an incredibly empowering experience. Knocking on complete strangers doors and talking to them one on one about the election and my candidate. How often do I actually engage with complete strangers? Never really. As I was walking the 12 block loop I found myself awakened to the power of Obama's campaign and the mobilizing of the many. It was great to step out of my routine and enter the world of my Milwaukee neighbors. We do live so insularly and there fear and hate can easily breed. It was the best 2 hours I have spent in awhile, even with the few disgruntled people and occasional McCain supporter. I encourage everyone to knock a few doors and reconnect.

(Swept was to be hung vertically not backwards L) It seems the work was just shipped out to Pittsburgh and its on its way back... I want to thank Amanda Bloomfield and Sally Bozzuto from the center for their help with install and shipping of the work.

from the HERMITAGE...

This is one of the many images of the Gulf that I took this summer during my residency. I was thinking about Catherine Opie's series of surfers as I was on the beach. I just received Opie's monograph from her current exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, thanks parents! I have spent some time with the book and I really appreciate the breadth of her work in its investigation of community. I was also pleased to be reminded that Opie is a fellow alumni of the San Francisco Art Institute.
