reciprocal labor....

“As a parable of a gifted person, “The Shoemaker and the Elves” is also a parable for artists. Most artists early on find themselves in the position of the shoemaker on the first night – a talent has appeared, but it’s naked, immature. Ahead lie the years of reciprocal labor which precede the release of an accomplished gift.”
Lewis Hyde The Gift

When talking with David Kinsey, his passion and commitment to his practice of painting is palpable. He shared stories about opportunities to exhibit in NYC right after Yale - but he turned them down, understanding he needed time with his painting, to mature as a painter. I respect this tremendously. Putting ones practice first and making the hungry market wait - training for the marathon rather than the sprint. My time here at the Hermitage has helped me re-evaluate my personal goals and focus on the artistic process taking me where it will.
