Milwaukee, WI

Coalition of Photographic Arts calls for submissions from WI, IL, MN and MI to Second Annual Juried Show, George Slade to be juror.

Wisconsin’s fastest growing arts organization, the Coalition of Photographic Arts (CoPA) is proud to announce the call for submissions for CoPA’s Second Annual Juried Exhibition. Artist working in photography in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan are invited to submit up to 5 images for consideration. George Slade, Artistic Director of the Minnesota Center for Photography, will jury this year’s exhibition.

Slade also served as Program Director for the Minnesota Center for Photography/McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships for Photographers, and is an adjunct assistant curator in the Department of Photography at The Minneapolis Institute of the Arts. Slade’s expert eye in selecting work has been honed over the years. He has been a panelist and portfolio reviewer for the Ohio Arts Council, Minnesota State Arts Board, Minnesota State Fair, Fotofest’s Meeting Place, Society for Photographic Education, Critical Mass and Photolucida. Slade is also a prolific writer, having contributed reviews and essays to the Encyclopedia of Twentieth Century Photography, exposure, Photo-eye Booklist, Minnesota History, and other publications. Slade lives in St. Paul with his two daughters.

In inviting Slade to serve as Juror, CoPA president Sonja Thomsen wrote, “We had our first CoPA juried show last August at Walkers Point Center for the Arts with Brian Ulrich as our juror. The exhibition was open to photographers from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. The exhibition was a wonderful success for both CoPA and Milwaukee in giving exposure to important work being made in the region. CoPA would like to continue to set this standard with our second juried exhibition, scheduled for this fall at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts in Milwaukee Wisconsin.”

This event follows the successful Inaugural Juried Exhibit held in 2007. Juror Brian Ulrich, photographer in Chicago IL, curated an exciting exhibition that was well received in the city and Midwest region. Curators from the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Photography and the Art Institute of Chicago came to view the exhibition. The Milwaukee Art Museum’s Photo Council collected two of the works in the exhibition. With the inclusion of a fourth state (Michigan) to the roster and the insight of juror George Slade, this year’s show promises to be an even bigger success.

Original photographic (film or digital) work executed in 2005 or later, will be accepted. Images must be submitted on CD or DVD.

The entry fee is $35.00 for up to five images. CoPA membership benefit waives the entry fee for all CoPA member entries.

The postmark deadline for submissions is June 25. The juror will select work for the show keeping in mind the constraints and possibilities of the exhibition space at WPCA.

Guidelines for submissions to the 2008 second annual Juried Show are available on CoPA’s website at www.copamilwaukee.com

The 2008 Second Annual Juried Show will run September 12 - October 18, 2008 at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts, 911 W. National Avenue, Milwaukee WI 53204.

The Coalition of Photographic Arts, founded in December 2004, is designed to develop appreciation, promote growth, and support the creation of fine art photography in the greater Milwaukee region. CoPA’s goal is to cultivate awareness of contemporary photography through educational programs, lectures, panel discussions, and exhibitions.
