So I had a wonderful visit with my dear friend Naomi Miller last week. She passed through Milwaukee on her self-created artist residency. She shared work, made work and visited with Cain (my husband) and I. I have been thinking about our time together and how great it was to be around someone who spoke my language...
We sat in my studio on Wednesday and tried to work independently as we also tried to catch up. We decided to listen to an episode from This American Life to fill the space and focus our attention to our own work. We listened to the recent episode on Unconditional Love. We sat 20 feet away both moved by these incredible stories, ultimately about how unconditional love is not about needing love but about being practical about love.
I have been thinking about this a lot lately and sharing the story with people every chance I get. Then today I finally explore Meet Me In Ataxia, Baby, a great photo blog published by a woman named Ondine, and there in her blog she references this same episode in her discussion of loneliness....

Saul Leiter photography exhibit opening at MAM

In Living Color: Photographs by Saul Leiter at the Milwaukee Art Museum
September 28, 2006 - January 7, 2007
"Like other New York street photographers of the 1940s and 1950s, Saul Leiter was adept at translating the mood and atmosphere of urban life into photographic form. What makes him unusual is his exceptional talent for composing images in color. Grounded in the subtle hues and muted tones of daily life, The exhibition will present some 70 color prints. Organized by Lisa Hostetler, assistant curator of photographs at the Milwaukee Art Museum, this will be the first major museum exhibition of the artist's color photographs, which are widely admired in the field but not well known to the general public. "
Saul Leiter will be giving a lecture on Thursday Sept 28 at 6:00pm.

Surface series online at Photoeye...

Photoeye is a great photography resource. Located in Santa Fe, the bookstore and gallery are worth a visit. Online one can access both the bookstore and gallery as well as auctions and their magazine. Photoeye also has a great number of online galleries of individual photographers work in their Photographers Showcase. You can search the portfolios by techniques, artist and keyword... a wealth of imagery. I am currently participating in their Photographers Showcase for one year... I am curious about the opportunites, if any, that may emerge from being in an online gallery. If you haven't explored photoeye I incourage you to do so, there is such a variety of work to be seen.

blogging... an education

so i am new to blogging and am definitely not an avid blogger... BUT i have been doing some research on the blogging community and found some really great blogs. I do have to admit the first quality photo blog i was introduced to was Brian Ulrich's , a site i frequent to stay informed and entertained... I have since become more familiar with the wonderful photography blogging world... much a do to a wonderful woman and photographer named Mel Trittin. Thanks for the education Mel. But in my research I have found very few photography blogs from women...? I would love to be introduced to some...
Speaking of women photographers and blogging, this is a beautiful image by Amy Stien. Amy was at Review Santa Fe with me this past May and we were in the juried show at PCNW this summer together, this image is a favorite.
